The days are shorter, the nights longer and the temperature drops. Here everyone gets a little sad at the time. But some people feel tired, unpretentious and unfortunate when the winter comes around the corner. They suffer from a winter depression . But what’s the difference between a winter dip and a winter depression? And what can you do?
The difference between a winter dip and a winter depression
A winter dip is what actually everyone has. When the sun shines, you are often a lot happier than when it’s raining outside. When autumn begins, many people feel a little less pleasant. They are tired earlier, more depressed, and feel rather lonely.
But when someone has a significant effect on these symptoms, there may be a winter depression. A winter depression is a real condition and is also called Seasonal Affective Disorder . This is a type of depression related to seasonal changes.
Symptoms of winter depression
The following symptoms may occur in people with a winter depression:
• High fatigue
• Disturbed sleep rhythm (much need for sleep)
• Concentration problems
• Closure of social contacts
• Heavy feeling in limbs
• Weight gain, need for food
Causes of winter depression
A clear cause for winter depression has not yet found researchers. But they agree that it is mainly due to the days that are shorter in the winter months (from October to March). The days are shorter and the amount of sunlight is less.
There is a hormone in your body that is created at night: melatonin . Because of this dust we can sleep well at night. During the day the melatonin concentration is a lot lower. Some researchers think that the reduced amount of daylight causes the melatonin level to be higher during the day than normal. This causes the biological clock to be disregarded and is no longer consistent with the normal day and night rhythm. You are tired and futile during the daytime.
But not everyone is suffering from a winter depression, while everyone in the winter experiences less sunlight. Therefore, a piece of construction would probably have to do with it.
What do you do for a winter depression?
Do you suffer from a winter depression or, to a lesser extent, a winter dip? Because mainly a lack of daylight is seen as a cause of a winter depression, light therapy may be a good treatment. This is artificial light that mimics sunlight and suppresses the hormone melatonin. Beside:
• Avoid contact with people! Due to a winter dip or depression, you often have less need for social contacts. But do not leave these contacts out of the way; stay among the people.
• Do not allow your feelings. Are you tired during the day? Do not go to bed. Do not you want to do something? Then do something right!
• Go outside, as much as possible. Just find that sunlight yourself. Have a day at the office, then take a walk in the lunch break.
• Movement can alleviate your complaints. So move! Most preferably in the fresh air.
• Use a wake-up light. This is an alarm clock that mimics the rising sun. This will keep you calm in a room full of light. Very nice to start your day.
I also notice that I sometimes feel a dip when the winter is around the corner. I’m getting harder to get my bed out and sometimes less energy.
