In previous articles you have already read how important it is to sleep well and sufficiently. This will restore your body and process events. In particular, the article “Understanding Sleeping: The Sleep Cycle” gives a lot of interesting information about this. However, in this article the emphasis is on the importance of sleep for the development of children.
Why sleep is so important for the development of children
For babies and children, sleep also has another very important function for development. Thus sleep affects the growth of the body and the brain. When children do not sleep sufficiently, a growth retardation can even be the result!
Insufficient sleep can cause growth retardation
Development of the body
As a result, new growth hormones are created to restore the damaged cells and replace dead cells. This hormone is mainly created when the child is in a deep sleep. When a baby or child sleeps very badly, it will spend relatively little time in a deep sleep which could cause a growth problem.
In addition to physical growth, sleep is very important for brain growth and development. The brain grows especially in the REM phase ( Rapid Eye Movement -> see article Sleep Cycle ). In relative terms, babies and children spend much more sleep time in this REM phase, ie half of sleep time. During this time, the brain grows and, as in adults , it processes the events of the day.
Sleeping become smarter?
It is therefore advisable to wake your child as little as possible during the REM sleep . How do you recognize this? You can see for example the movement and breathing of your child. Read more about this article in the article; Understanding Sleeping: The Sleep Cycle.
In addition to the development of the child, it is also not pleasant to be awakened during the deep REM Sleep. This is also true for everyone, so also for adults. You will then become disoriented and often do not know what’s happening! You know the feeling. Long waiting is never necessary because the Brake phase per sleep cycle (ie a continuous REM sleep) takes only 20-25 minutes.
