That sleep is important, we know. But how important, we do not always stand still. Therefore the facts.
People need sleep. Through sleep, body and mind recover from the day before and loads up for the day of tomorrow. Compare it with a battery in the charger.
During sleep, additional growth hormones are created so that damaged cells can recover and dead cells are replaced by new ones. This growth hormone is especially created during deep sleep. Babies and children who sleep too little could therefore get a growth retardation in extreme cases.
Growing the brain
Sleeping well is not only important for the physical growth, but also for the growth of the brain. Maybe you recognize it. Your baby is good to sleep, but suddenly (in his sleep) becomes restless. He draws grimas, even smiles in his sleep and breathes irregularly. Nothing obvious, your baby is in the REM phase.
Babies have relative REM sleep relative to adult, about 50 percent of the sleep cycle consists of this phase. This has to do with the fact that the brain of babies still has to grow, and that happens during this phase. In addition, all impressions of the day are also processed.
So the REM sleep is very important! Therefore, keep your baby as low as possible during REM sleep. That’s good for the development of your baby, but also fun for you. If sleep is interrupted in this phase, you will be awkwardly awake. This applies not only to your baby, but also to us as adults. You become disoriented and wake up.
Fortunately, babies have a short sleep cycle, which does not take the REM phase for a long time. A sleep cycle takes about 45 to 50 minutes, so the REM sleep lasts about 20 minutes.
