A power nap is a short nap in the afternoon that you should give more energy, alertness and even creativity. But is this true? Is a power plug healthy? And what are the pros and cons of a power cut? In this article, I explain everything about the “power shutdown” phenomenon, and I summarize the advantages for you.
What is a power cut?
During the day you may be tired for various reasons: you have not slept in the night, you have eaten wrong or it’s just your biological clock. Many people therefore choose to close their eyes in the afternoon.
A power plug is a short sleep in the afternoon and is meant to be a quick break for quick energy. It is also called a key to sleep or wonders.
Powernap lasts: How long should I sleep?
If you are going to sleep for a certain period of time, that may be detrimental to your body. This way you can wake up more tired than you are going to sleep and can disturb your sleep rhythm . NASA has researched sleep and has arrived at the following times:
10-20 minutes – If you want energy quickly, you can take a short power plug. It is advisable to do this for no more than 20 minutes. During your sleep, you are going through different phases. The first phase is the phase in which you fall asleep. The second phase is a slight sleep in which your body is resting, but you do not sleep very deeply. After about 20 minutes the deep sleep begins. It’s important to wake up in the light sleep phase, because you’d rather sleep by.
60 minutes – Sleeping 60 minutes makes you better remember and remember faces. Sleeping an hour has an effect on your working memory. The downside is that your body has reached deep sleep, which makes you tired and tired when you wake up.
90 minutes – If you want to sleep longer in the afternoon, choose to sleep for 90 minutes. With 90 minutes, all sleep phases (the entire sleep cycle ) are all gone. If you wake up for more than 90 minutes, you’re still in the middle of that sleep cycle. That way, your sleep rhythm is confused and you will not wake up.
The benefits of a power plug
• You are alerter – Sleeping for a few minutes is a bit worse when you wake up. This can last for 2 hours!
• It increases productivity – Occasionally sleeping is extremely good for your productivity, because after that you can get started for the full 100%.
• You have less stress – For a short while, you are completely free to relax and relax. This reduces your stress level.
• Better than caffeine – A powermap works more effectively than a cup of coffee and is healthier!
The disadvantages of a power plug
The above benefits are of course applicable to someone who is tired during the day. They are actually all logical and general benefits of being equipped and energetic. Therefore, I would not advise anyone to do a power cut every afternoon, but only if you are really tired during the day and your body needs rest. The downside of power shutters is that you disturb your natural sleep wake rhythm . It is by nature not the intention that we sleep during the day, but we sleep at night and charge our battery so that during the day (as long as it’s light) we are energized and productive. However, it is also not the intention (or “of course”) that we are already in the afternoon, and in that case, a afternoon sleep can provide a way to get more on the right energy arrow.
It seems that there are not many disadvantages to the power plug. It is very important that you do the right thing. Otherwise you run the risk of disturbing your sleep rhythm. If you sleep longer than the intention is, you wake up and sleep better at night.
The correct length is very important, but the time when you take a nap is important. Take your nap after lunch half past two and half past four. If you go to sleep later than 4 o’clock, then it may also affect your night’s sleep and you will not sleep well at night.
