Bedbugs , are small animals crawling through your bed and living your blood. It sounds terrifying, but it’s the reality! These animals are more common and provide itchy red bumps. Especially backpackers will recognize this problem as it is common in the (mainly cheap-ass) hotels and hostels. How do you recognize bed bugs and how can you fight them?
What are bed bugs?
Bedwants are small brown parasitic insects of approximately 5 mm. They live mainly in the dark and turn on body heat. Therefore you find them especially in and around your bed.Through their oval body they crawl very easily between your sheets, your slatted floor or in the slits of your mattress.
Where do bed bugs come from?
Bedding makes it easy to multiply and spread. They occur in places where many and alternate people come together. Just think of hotels, dorms and pensions or public places like cinemas and trains.
Hotels and pensions are a breeding ground for bed bugs
And nowadays, traveling extensively throughout the world. This also causes the bedbugs to spread. They are easily (unnoticed) taken from hotel rooms in suitcases and clothes, and then come to other places like the following hostel (or at your home!).
Bed Bugs symptoms
Fortunately, bedbugs are not dangerous, but very annoying! They live from human or animal blood. When it’s night and you’re sleeping, she’ll hit. They bite you and leave itchy red bumps. Because you often do not notice that you are bitten and the bumps can occur later, you do not always feel that you have bed bugs in your bed.
The difference with mosquito bumps is that these bumps can also occur on the legs and feet (a mosquito does not beneath the blankets) and in groups of multiple bumps, a kind of cluster. Due to the severe itch the bumps are often scratched. This can cause annoying spots or even scars. Basically, the humpbacks will disappear again, but a soothing ointment can be used against very bad itch.
How can you recognize bed bugs?
Especially when you travel a lot, it is important to check your bed, hostel, or guesthouse where you stay. Prevent them from grazing and traveling with you! Check the bed and places around the bed, such as the skirting boards, on small brown patches or red spots (crushed bed bugs). Keep your suitcase closed until you are sure there is no bed in your room to prevent them from getting into your clothes or suitcase.
I’m bothered by bed bugs, what now?
Do you find bed bugs in your room during your trip? Then I advise you to reject the room and ask for another room. But at your home, you can hardly change rooms!
Bedding can not handle extremely high or low temperatures (below 0 and above 50 degrees). The hot washing of your bedding or clothes can in any case kill the bed in your clothes or bedding. This does not give you the bedtime from your room yet and does not solve the problem completely. In winter, you could open everything (a few days) to bring your bedroom to freezing temperature, but that will often be no (or no nice) option to me. Completing battles completely is therefore difficult and you can do the best by a professional control service.
