The difference between fatigue and sleepiness
Fatigue is a persistent feeling of exhaustion, which makes physical and mental exercise capacity lower than the usual level. It may be clear that life itself becomes difficult when your body is too tired to move and your brain is too tired to think. Unless you suffer from disturbed sleep, fatigue is usually not accompanied by excessive sleepiness during the day, causing you to fall asleep unintentionally. To recover from fatigue, you must rest, not just sleep. Fatigue thus has to do with your energy level and mental condition.

Fatigue can have many causes. We call some causes of fatigue:

Sleepiness usually functions as the signal that your body falls asleep. Normally sleepiness forms part of a healthy physiological function and depends on how well you slept the night, the circadian rhythm and the circumstances. For example, you become more sleepy if you do boring and monotonous work, if it is hot or if your body cools down. Even after eating you can feel sleepy.
There is abnormal or excessive sleepiness when you fall asleep in unbelievable moments or have to fight to stay awake. If this occurs for more than a few months, sleepiness is considered to be chronic and abnormal. In the medical world these symptoms are referred to as ” excessive daytime sleepiness ” or “hypersomnia”. In English, one speaks of Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS). Excessive sleepiness during daytime is defined as the inability to stay awake during the day, resulting in unintended and unbreakable attacks of sleep.
Sometimes a sleep disorder such as narcolepsy or sleep apnea causes excessive sleepiness during the day. Symptoms of sleep attacks during the day should not be ignored. It can result in a reduced quality of life and is associated with an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and even increased risk of death. Therefore, please visit a general practitioner if you are inadvertently falling asleep during the day.
The severity of sleepiness during the day can be estimated using a short standardized questionnaire called the Epworth Sleepiness Scale. A score of more than or equal to 10 means it is likely that someone is excessively sleepy during the day. Test here how sleepy you are!
