Sleeping is a special phenomenon. Walking through the house, moving furniture, opening cabinet doors or even plastering the fridge! Not everybody is comfortable sleeping at night.You can do all sorts of things while you sleep! I’ve dumped the sleepwalking phenomenon and put some things in front of you.
What is sleep walking?
What exactly is it? According to Van Dale, it literally means ‘walking around asleep’. So you walk in your sleep while it seems like you’re awake.
If you walk in sleep you open your eyes and you can move forward effortlessly. You are even alerter and stronger than during the day! You also have a sweet expression on your face and you are very confused when you actually wake up.
The duration of such a nightly walk can vary from just a few minutes to sometimes even half an hour, and usually occurs in the first three hours after sleeping. Besides, it’s not just for walking. It can also be all kinds of other activities, such as dressing, moving items, opening up wardrobes, eating in your sleep and even sitting in the car (although this will occur earlier than in children).
Some sleepers will even be in the car!
Sleeping can occur with everyone, but especially children are very sensitive to this. One in 3 to 6 children (mostly between 4 and 6 years) does this every now and then.
Causes sleep walking
But how is this caused now? Not everybody is affected, so what does some children and grown ups do?
This is a very difficult point, because we actually do not know exactly. Indeed, a true obvious cause is not to be indicated. However, experts think that it is especially important for children with an unplanned nervous system or fatigue. In addition, sleepwalks are often associated with stress, fever and certain medications.
Just like dreaming , your brain processes the things they have not been able to handle during the day (this is especially true if you have experienced stress, tension or conflict during the day). During sleep walking, the brain partially wakes up and turns the body into movements.
It is also said that sleeping walks are hereditary. A sleepwander often has more people in the family where this occurs.
Consequences of sleep walking
Sleeping walks do not have major consequences. The sleepwalker’s senses are often very sharp and you can travel well. Also, after the ‘walking’ person, the person goes back to sleep well.
It is only dangerous for risk sleeping. In such a case, the sleepwander actually walks up the street, hangs out of the window, or does he even want to climb the window. Of course, there is the danger that someone may injure himself, so someone may fall or injure certain objects.
If you wake up after sleep, you will not know anything anymore. During sleep, memory does not work properly; You do not beat anything. A wanderer can thus be disoriented and confused during awakening.
Tips for sleep walking
Is there anything to do to prevent sleep walking? Unfortunately, there are many things to do with sleepwalks! In children, it often happens about puberty. Unfortunately, adults who walk in their sleep will usually continue to do their whole life. Here are some tips for dealing with sleepwalks (or sleepwalters).
- Do you see someone walking asleep? Do you have to wake him up or not? Best of all, you can calmly guide him to bed.
- Ensure a safe environment. Make sure your room is cleaned so that you can not stumble across things as a sleepwalker, close windows and make sure that sharp corners are covered.
- Place a stairwell before the stairs if you have children who sleep asleep (or if you do this yourself).
- And above all – take care of yourself! In adults, sleep walking is often accompanied by stress and fatigue. Reducing stress – and relaxing to go to bed – can help reduce the risk of sleep walking.
