How do you break through a negative vicious circle?
Can sleep sleep? Or is sleep even the key to success? . Something I’ve had in my life several times is the well-known vicious circle … that can be both positive and negative. In fact, I think we are always (consciously or unconsciously) in a vicious circle, even though these are not always the same direction.
The vicious circle
What do I understand exactly below? I mean that positive or negative actions, choices, habits or behaviors are counteracting other habits and actions that result from it. To make this more concrete, I want to give the following (negative) vicious circle as an example.
I believe it is holy in that sleep , nutrition , energy , movement and productivity arevery closely linked. Neglecting one of these pillars also has a negative effect on the other pillars. Neglecting your sleep or diet leads to less energy, which makes you more difficult to turn yourself into sports. Less physical movement causes less energy and a worse night’s sleep, which again causes you to eat worse (fatigue increases the urge for fat and easy bite). Due to poor nutrition, you sleep worse and so we can keep on going …
The order of actions in which I explain the example above is irrelevant and can be done in any order. It is all about everything in relation to each other . (For these specific relationships, blog articles can be found on InSlaap if you want to know more about it).
A vicious circle does not always go the same direction
The beautiful vicious circles are that it works on two sides, breaking through a negative vicious circle can be done by breaking down a negative habit. This can often be the important first step to bend over and just get into that positive upward spiral!
My own experience
A few years ago, I suddenly realized that I had long been in a negative spiral. I did not live healthy; never sported, irregular and unhealthy and I did not have a healthy sleep rhythm . As a result, I never had a lot of energy (I did not know better than this was normal) and I was undergoing little … both on a personal, social, and career basis, “was no progress.
I did not know better
It seemed like it was one of the other things that I realized that this was not the way to go and that something had to change. I still know that I woke up at night when it seemed to me that something had to change, and immediately. I made a decision, reset the alarm clock, and got up early the next morning to go running.
This sudden introduction has changed my life. From that moment (over 3 years ago) I went to work actively. From the first day, this has directly affected me throughout my lifestyle . Soon I went to eat healthier, go to work, stop smoking and get more energy with me. I also got the urge to further develop myself in many other areas … I am reading books and blogs about health, but also about personal development, productivity and just mentioning it all. So I also came to sleep at the topic. I went deeper into this and realized the importance of it (and eventually even started this blog!).
I was obviously in a positive vicious circle and gained more energy, knowledge, self-confidence. I became more productive, enterprising and flourishing in all respects. It felt like I got stronger with the day.
Back in a negative spiral
It has been a fierce year by getting sick of a loved one. When this person passed away a few months ago, my battery seemed to be completely empty. This had a direct impact on my entire lifestyle.
The sport got along, I went worse eating, started smoking again and drinking more, and my sleep fell underneath. For about two months, I found myself in this negative circle. This is also the reason why my last article on InSlaap appeared on October 2. Because of a lack of energy, I simply could not take it anymore.
A month ago, that moment of reflection came back … This is not what I want and not what is good for me .Fortunately, I knew how to feel, how to do it and how to do it!
This has been the time I literally decided and chose to reverse the direction of the vicious circle and turn the way back up. I went back to sports, eating healthy and going to bed for a while. Meanwhile, I go to the gym again 3 times a week, I eat healthier, I drink less and I sleep more. This immediately results in me feeling more energized by the day, and also wanting to do things and develop myself.
This is not what I want
And see one of the results here, finally an article on this blog! And I’m so enthusiastic about typing that this may be the longest blog since the start of InSlaap 🙂
Back to sleep
But what does sleep really mean? I am convinced that sleeping well is not only indispensable for breaking a vicious circle, I think this is the most effective and easy way to take that first step. An even more important weapon than sports and nutrition, because these steps follow my mind “self-evident” if you have more energy (you must have the ambition to change these habits).
Adequate sleep leads almost directly to more energy, and having energy is the key to productivity and the power to change habits. If you have energy you are so much better able to take your bag for a visit to the gym!
By moving enough and sleeping well, I immediately get less of a need for poor bite and proper need for healthy and nutritious food. All these healthy habits contribute to my energy, making me feel like doing things again and feeling that I have become much more productive!
Energy is the key
I’m in that upward spiral and feel stronger. I hope this article helps you to take that important first step. My advice is to start adjusting your sleep pattern. Go to bed tonight to get your battery really good for tomorrow. Find the energy and power to change so that you can realize your goals. You are responsible for your life and how you feel. So take that first step and take your life into your own hands!
