How much sleep does a baby need?
Every new parent is wondering how much sleep their newborn needs. How long should a baby actually sleep? Below is an overview of guidelines per time. Remember, every child is different. Some children need 1 to 2 hours more or less. Also check the page’s overview of children’s sleep needs .

- 1 – 4 weeks: 15 – 17 hours of sleep per day / once
Newborns sleep 15 – 16 hours a day, but in short periods of 2 to 4 hours. Early children sleep a little longer on average. In a baby, the internal biological clock or circadian rhythm is not linked to day and night. They do not have any sleep patterns yet
- 1 – 4 months: 14 – 15 hours sleep a day
After about 6 weeks, a baby begins to develop a kind of sleep pattern. The longest sleep period can take 4-6 hours and occurs more often in the evening. A kind of day and night rhythm becomes noticeable.
- 4 – 12 months: 14 – 15 hours sleep a day
During this period it is important that your baby gets a healthy sleep rhythm. Babies up to 6 months do three naps a day. From 6 months this can be gradually reduced to two nbs a day and your baby is always better able to sleep at night. The first morning nap is usually around 9 o’clock and takes about an hour. The early afternoon nap starts between 12 and 2 and takes about a to two hours and late afternoon nap starts between 3 and 5 hours and variable in duration.
Dreumesen and Toddlers
- 1 – 3 years: 12 – 14 hours sleep per day / one
After about 1.5 years, your dreams save your morning nap and only a long nap a day that takes about 1-3 hours. A toddler usually goes to bed between 19 and 20 o’clock and wakes between 6 and 8 o’clock in the morning.
Up to a year or five, a child can have another afternoon nap. These are getting shorter.
