Until late in the night behind your computer or with your mobile? Sometimes it’s necessary but it’s not good for your night’s rest! The blue light of devices like your smartphone or laptop interferes with our natural sleep. Fortunately, there are apps that allow you to filter this blue light on your phone or laptop, and still work (if it really is).
The screens of electronic devices are illuminated with a so-called blue light. This light looks at the body for daylight . During the day it’s no problem, but in the evening you can avoid this as much as possible. By exposure to this blue light, the production of melatonin (the sleep hormone) decreases, making us less tired and falling asleep more difficult.
Fortunately, there are special apps for your computer, tablet and smartphone that filter the blue light. These apps provide an orange or yellow glow, so you can make the screen brightness darker and it’s a lot nicer to look at. Actually, a little bit of the same idea as BlauBlock ‘s filter eyeglasses, which I have previously written a review about.
Would you like to work on your laptop or computer before you go to bed? Then you can filter the bright blue light with the F.lux program.This program can be installed and works on both Mac and Windows.
F.lux automatically adjusts the color of your screen and creates a red glow. This is done based on your location and time. The program will know exactly what time it’s up to you and what time the sun is undergoing. Based on that, it automatically switches to a ‘dimstand’ (the strength of which you can customize yourself).
Do you still want to do something that requires good clarity? Then you can simply disable the program by clicking on ‘disable for an hour’.
Many people are still busy with their smarthphone in the evening, or even in bed. It’s not unwise to filter the light on your phone. For the Android users, there is therefore the Twilight app. This app filters the blue light of your mobile and, like the F.lux program, creates a red or yellow glow.
The app automatically adjusts settings to your location and time. So if you install the app and fill in your location, then it will turn on automatically when the sun goes down. You can also manually set this.
The app is available for free in the Play Store.
For the iPad and iPhone, there are few apps to filter the blue light. However, there are the browser apps Koala Browser and Dark Night Browser that you can download for free. These apps provide a special browser that lets you filter the light.
Fortunately, the latest Apple devices have an extra touch: the Night Shift . This is a night mode that is standard on Apple’s latest models (so it’s not a separate app). This mode changes the blue light into a yellow glow. To do this, go to:
Settings -> Display and Brightness -> Night Shift.
You can set the time yourself. Once you’ve done this, your iPhone or iPad will automatically switch to the Night Shift. Would you rather see the ‘normal light’? Then you can turn off the Night Shift very easily again.
