When you are pregnant, much changes in your body. Your hormone condition is confused, you get rid of your back, burning stomach acid, shortness of breath and a huge bump on your stomach also grows. These inconveniences can still be overlooked but the problem is that you often can not rest well, insomnia often occurs in pregnant women. By adopting the right position when sleeping, you can get a better night’s sleep.
Why should I lie on my left?
You may have already learned that lying on your left side, the best attitude is in bed during pregnancy. You may not know why this is the best attitude.
During pregnancy, the uterus will increase. This exerts an increasing pressure on your intestines. The heavy uterus is flat on the main vein that runs on the right side of your spine and regulates the blood flow of the lower body.
When this vein becomes pressurized, it reverses the same effect as a hose. The flow is inhibited and the blood can not flow well from your lower body. This will swell your ankles, feet and legs. Another and also annoying occurrence is the occurrence of hemorrhoids and also hypertension or decreased blood pressure. In addition to the effect on your body, less blood can flow to the placenta and thus to the baby.
If you have ever suffered from dizziness during an echo in the hospital, that may be due to decreased blood pressure because the head vein is pinched in that position.
In conclusion, we must note that sleeping on your back is the worst attitude, especially in the last trimester of pregnancy. If you lie on your right side, it’s better than on your back, but lying on your left is the best position during pregnancy. Then put the least pressure on the vein at your spine.
May I lay on my belly in the first few weeks?
In the first twelve weeks, the uterus is not so big that it protrudes above the pelvis. The pressure on your organs is then minimal. There is no danger to yourself and to the fetus if you sleep on your belly during those first twelve weeks. You will notice yourself when this position is no longer comfortable. Then lie on your side, preferably the left side. So the first twelve weeks you can choose what you find comfortable, then you lie down with a left-hand preference.
But I do not find that comfortable! What now?
With pillows you can take a comfortable attitude. You can choose a pregnancy pillow but you do not have to. Lie on your left with your upper leg on the bottom with a pillow under your head, one under your belly, between your knees and one to hug with you if you like it.Support your body and divide the pressure over the pillows.
If you roll back and wake up again, you will be in the right position again. If your partner finds that you are wrong, you can give a signal. When the child is born, you decide how to lay down. On your belly, back, your side, hanging or on your head!
