How many people snore?
Estimates vary from 10 percent to more than half of the people. About twice as many men as women snore .
What are the causes?
Of those who arrive at the ENT doctor, appears in half the soft back of the palate too weak. The palate falls – if you lie on the back – with almost the uvula against the pharyngeal on. It vibrates through the breath and makes noise. About 20 percent of snorers have a small lower jaw, a lower jaw that stands or falls during sleep constantly too far back. Then lower the tongue and strottenklepje almost to the pharynx to. That vibrates.
A combination of these two causes affects a quarter of snorers. In a small percentage plays another cause, such as a chronic stuffy nose. In people with obesity is the soft part of the pharynx thicker, so that the airway is too narrow, and that also causes snoring.
Snoring is unhealthy?
Snoring by itself can not hurt. In some of the snorers drops the palate or tongue, however, completely against the throat, making touch sealed the airway and breathing stops, oxygen deficiency. And that is unhealthy.
A stoppage of more than ten seconds, called apnea . As per hour occur more than ten arrests, there is the sleep apnea syndrome. Apnea Patients are getting washed out and excessive daytime sleepiness. They can concentrate poor and forgetful. Eventually they can get high blood pressure.
Almost all apnea patients snore. Some snorers touches the airway partially closed during sleep without breathing comes to a halt. They breathe heavily and be sleepy during the day. This is called the UARS (Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome).
What can you do yourself?
In case of obesity: losing weight . Other measures that can reduce snoring are: no alcohol in the two hours before bedtime, do not smoke, do not use sedatives or sleeping pills and eat heavy meals just before bedtime.
And if snoring continues?
The GP can refer to the otolaryngologist snorers. Which will also examine the cause is most likely and check for sleep apnea syndrome and UARS. Then, the treatment is determined. Medicines should not stop there, because so far found no effective drugs.
What helps against sleep apnea syndrome?
The apnea patient is a mask that adds air to the pharynx is ‘blown up’, which keeps the airway open. Stop breathing anymore and moreover stops snoring.
What helps a weakened palate?
Then, the palate can be made smaller by three methods.
- a small piece of the palate is cut away There, at the same time with, if present, tonsils. This is done under general anesthesia and takes a night in the hospital.
- Under local anesthetic, removed a piece palate with the laser. That could outpatient.
- Through the administration of high-frequency radio waves (somnoplastiek) mucosa is contracted under the palate. This should be repeated 3 or 4 times. The effect of these three methods is similar. A risk of the first two methods is that the palate is too tight. Thereby loses its function when drinking and enters the liquid while drinking from the nose.
What helps malformations of the jaw?
At too small a lower jaw or a lower jaw that is too far to the back, can help a ‘bracket’, which in the sleep of the jaw, and thereby also hold the tongue forward. In addition, the tongue can be moved forward slightly surgically, or the lower jaw which are made larger.
Help treatments really?
At about four in five snorers who visit the otolaryngologist, snoring after treatment decreases.
