Is your Fifi also at the footsteps when you go to sleep? We love our pets and some people take their loyal four-legged dog everywhere. It is not strange to many people that their cat or dog is in the bedroom or even sleeping in the same bed. Now I do not have that dilemma myself with Frodo (my goldfish), but for many people it’s normal that their pet crawls well into bed. Is that wise? What are the benefits and disadvantages of sleeping with your pet?
Benefits of sleeping with your pet
Several studies have been conducted on sleeping with pets. For example, the Mayo Sleep Clinic examined what exactly the effect of this is. They surveyed a total of 150 people, of which about 73 had a pet.
Calmer and safer
One thing they found is that people like it when they sleep with their pet. They feel calmer when their hairy boyfriend is next to them. Some people who participated in the study fell asleep faster and had a better night’s rest.
Although there were also a number of participants who could not sleep better with their pet in the bedroom. Snoring dogs or cats that are active at night can cause noise.
People also feel safer to feel with their dog or cat in the bedroom or on their bed. This is especially true for singles and people whose partner does not always sleep at home.
Risks of sleeping with your pet
However, there may also be a number of dangers when you sleep with your pet. Not everybody knows that animals carry many bacteria. For example, dogs and cats have a lot of small mites around their eyes, also called demodex.
These mites are especially active at night – if you sleep well. They can walk over from your dog or cat to you and nest in your eyelashes.Once here, they are hard to get rid of and cause itchy, red and dry eyes.
In addition, animals lose many skin scales that end up between the sheets. These can also cause allergic reactions.

Personally, I say, your pet does not eat at the table and does not belong in bed. But who am I, it’s up to you whether you want to sleep with your pet in bed. If you relax and sleep better, that is of course a big advantage. Especially if you suffer from sleep problems and sleep well otherwise. Remember that hygiene is not ideal and you can really get it.
